History When founders Samuel and Sarah Sellers arrived in 1860, this sandy bit of earth, pocketed with chaparral and live oak, was said to be hospitable only to jackrabbits and sagebrush. Not to be discouraged, the Sellers family planted orchards and opened a school. Soon, with the help of a host of settlers drawn to this West Delta community, Oakley Township was born. Families built businesses, schools and churches and by the early 20th century, Oakley had a railroad depot, post office, hotel, library, hardware and feed store and had planted its first almond cash crop. Oakley was well on its way to becoming a full-fledged town founded in agriculture and fueled by a spirit of determination that continues to mark its inhabitants. When Oakley incorporated in 1999, it became California Delta’s newest city.
