Antioch, California

The Gateway to the Delta
Come to Antioch!  Here, surrounded by rivers, creeks and open space, you'll find a compelling mix of Victorian, Spanish and early American architecture.  When blended with traditional single family homes, condominiums, town homes and planned communities, life doesn't get better!  Standing at the door to the California Delta's 1,000 miles of waterways, this growing community is known as the "Gateway to the Delta."

An Affordable Lifestyle
Are you looking for an affordable alternative to residing in busy San Francisco?  As the price of real estate goes up, more people are choosing to live outside the limits of the big city.  Sitting at the heart of eastern Contra Costa County, Antioch offers one of the easiest lifestyles in the Bay Area.  Look here for homes with larger, kid and pet friendly yards as well as plentiful recreational activities and a wide variety of employment, business and industrial opportunities.

Land for Your Home or Business
Are you in the market for property for your home or business?  Land is plentiful and affordable in Antioch.  Retail and office space here lease for 20 to 30 percent less than in other parts of central Contra Costa County.  Business and industry are thriving in Antioch!

Hub of California Commerce
No matter where you work in the Bay Area, you'll never be far from home when you live in Antioch.  Situated centrally between San Francisco and Sacramento, Antioch's location makes it the hub of California commerce.  Head south and west and you'll be in the heart of high tech Silicon Valley.  Travel east and you'll find yourself in Central Valley's agricultural communities.

Small Town Roots
Antioch's roots are deep in small town America.  The city was founded in 1849, when brothers William and Joseph Smith and a troupe of settlers camped under the wide oaks in tents.  Taken with the natural beauty of the place, they decided to stay.  That first winter the new community built five homes and planted a harvest.  Two years later they voted to name their new home after the biblical city Antioch of Syria.

First Industry
Town limits were expanded when it was discovered that residents were settling far from city boundaries…while assuming they were still in town!  The first industries were asparagus canneries, hay, lumber and shipping, but Antioch's coal mines put it on the map.  You can still visit the Black Diamond and Cumberland Mines, which are now local tourist attractions.

More for Your Dollar Here
Today, Antioch is a thriving community with a strong economic foundation in business and industry.  Growing businesses, plenty of jobs and widespread new development mean a high standard of living for you.  Come to Antioch!  You'll get more for your dollar here.

Escape to Antioch
Whether you like to fish, swim, ski or bask in the sun, you'll find something to do here.  There are more than 294 acres of park land developed for recreation and facilities offering fun for everyone.  Like to fish?  Camp along the river in your tent or RV, or take a boat out on the Delta.  You'll find some of the best striped bass and sturgeon fishing in Antioch waters.

Humphrey the Humpback Whale
You never know what will happen when you're boating the Delta's San Joaquin River.  In 1985, the eyes of the world were on Antioch when Humphrey the Humpback Whale took a wrong turn and ended up beached on the banks of the San Joaquin River.  That story ended happily when Humphrey was led back to the Pacific Ocean using the sounds of whales preparing to feed.

Let's Go to the Park
Don't miss the Black Diamond Coal Mines!  This 3,560 acre historical preserve has been around since the 1860’s and is still a popular tourist attraction.  Stroll through the Contra Loma Regional Park, 776 acres set aside for hiking, picnicking and swimming.   Then take the whole family on a Delta waterways tour at the Brannan Island State Recreation Area.  Want more?  Spectacular views abound at the 19,000 acre Mount Diablo State park.  And be sure to visit the Prewett Family Water Park, with its five pools, three slides and waterfalls!  There's a great skate park in town too.

Like Golf?
When you live in Antioch, you can enjoy a round of golf within a few miles of home.  There are two challenging 18-hole courses within the city, and many more golf courses in surrounding communities.

Arts and Culture
Like theater and the arts?  Check out big city arts at Another Theatre Company, or Antioch Rivertown Theatre.  The Diablo Symphony Orchestra and Contra Costa Ballet also perform in town.   For small town offerings, don't miss the Contra Costa County Fair, held at the Antioch Fairgrounds each year.  And you'll enjoy two days of food, fun and music at the annual Rivertown Jamboree.

Rolling Up Gravity Hill
Antioch is known for unique attractions too.  Take a drive along Empire Mine Road just outside the city.  When you reach the trough along a bend in the road, stop and place your car in neutral.  Keep your foot near the brake, though…your car will back rapidly uphill!

While it's said that schoolchildren who drowned when their bus slid off the road here are pushing your car away from a similar fate, the truth is much less exotic.  This spot in Antioch is one of only a few known "Gravity Hills" in the United States.  Trees and houses in these areas appear to be leaning rather than perpendicular…and water seems to run uphill!  The absence of a horizon contributes to an optical illusion which distorts your visual references, making the road appear to have an uphill slant when it's actually a downhill slope.
